Zarya's Enemy Vs Ally Ultimate Comparison
Zarya's Allied Synergies
Zarya's top support heroes:
1) Mercy: I have Zarya rated as Mercy's best ally to support and for good reason. Mercy's healing beam works incredibly well with Zarya as it will heal up Zarya fast and efficiently. Mercy's healing beam is far more powerful than Zenyatta's Harmony Orb or Lucio's heal aura in this case. Mercy's healing beam virtually eliminates the need for Zarya to worry about reaching for health packs.
Zarya typically doesn't go to far away from her team so she is generally safe for Mercy to follow around. Zarya can also protect Mercy from Projected Barriers if she is being targeted or flanked by offensive enemies. Even Zarya's personal Particle Barriers can act as a shield for Mercy to get behind to take cover.
Mercy's damage boosting beam has virtually no use with Zarya's Graviton Surge, but damage boosting Zarya weapons tends to be very powerful, especially when Zarya's weapon is charged up.
Zarya's poor mobility makes it a long time for her to run back to the fight faster after dying, so she dramatically benefits from Mercy's Resurrect to get back almost instantly.
When using a Graviton Surge, Mercy can damage boost Zarya's charged particle shots or another ally's ultimates or abilities to quickly wipe out the enemies stuck in the surge.
When combined with another healer on the team, Ana's Biotic Grenades can allow Zarya to soak up a lot of continuous damage, but keep in mind that Biotic Grenades do not effect shield HP regeneration rate. Friendly Biotic Grenades will still land on Zarya when her Particle Barrier is up, but not enemy Biotic Grenades.
When Ana is getting flanked and she misses a Sleep Dart, Zarya can provide a Projected Barrier to help keep Ana alive from the flanker.
When Zarya uses Graviton Surge, the best thing for Ana to do with the surged up enemies is to throw a Biotic Grenade at them to deal some splash damage while preventing them from healing any damage. Ana could also use her ultimate Nano Boost on a specific ally while providing Biotic Rifle heals to that Nano Boosted ally to help take out the clumped up enemies in the surge.
Zarya ranks very high for a great candidate for Ana to Nano Boost, especially if her Particle Gun is already charged up. Zarya will greatly benefit from all aspects of Nano Boost making her one tough beast to take down.
3) Zenyatta: Zenyatta's Harmony Orb can be a decent way to heal Zarya up slowly, although not nearly as effective as Mercy's healing beam, but it can enable Zarya to be more aggressive at staying in the front lines to absorb damage with her Particle Barriers and reduce (or eliminate) the need to worry about getting health packs. In order to maintain the Harmony Orb you need to keep line of sight with Zenyatta, which usually does happen between Zarya and Zenyatta.
Be mindful which enemy has received Zenyatta's Discord Orb as that should be a prime target for you as all damage done to that target will be amplified by +50%.
Zenyatta is a very squishy support hero and he is very prone to getting flanked by offensive enemies. Zarya can protect Zenyatta with a Projected Barrier during these times.
Zenyatta's ultimate Transcendence is a powerful team healing ability, which can enable Zenyatta's team to advance forward giving Zarya an easy chance to go further into the front lines to deal damage effectively. Using Particle/Projected Barriers during Transcendence can be an option because they can still charge up your weapon to make it stronger, but the damage blocked won't mean much.
During a Graviton Surge, the only method of Zenyatta to deal damage to the surge up enemies is simply firing energy orbs at the clumped up enemies. However, Zenyatta can use a Transcendence to protect allies that are getting up close to the clumped up enemies. Allies such as a Roadhog using his ultimate Whole Hog, Genji using Dragonblade, Reaper using Deathblossom or Tracer using Pulse Bomb can all benefit from having Transcendence on to help them survive while using their ultimates against enemies stuck in a Graviton Surge.
4) Lucio: Lucio's auras work great with Zarya. Lucio's speed aura enables Zarya to be more aggressive with popping in and out of the front lines quicker while using her Particle Barrier to absorb damage. Speed aura helps Zarya to escape from enemy ultimates as normally she is very slow without it. Speed aura enables Zarya to get back to the fight much faster after dying and can help her to reposition elsewhere much faster.
Lucio's heal aura is great for keeping Zarya consistently healed up during a match and since Zarya is usually right around her team, she is usually near Lucio's line of sight to take advantage of his heal aura. But keep in mind you must be at least 30 meters of each other (and keep line of sight) in order to receive Lucio's auras.
Lucio can protect Zarya up close from deadly close range heroes such as Mei's freeze gun, McCree's Flashbangs and Reaper's shotguns by blowing them away from Zarya with his Soundwave ability. Zarya can also protect Lucio from getting ambushed by putting a Projected Barrier on him.
Lucio's ultimate Sound Barrier provides Zarya and his team with powerful temporary shields which allows Zarya to have the opportunity to be more aggressive at moving in the front lines to deal damage to her enemies for a short period of time. Using Particle/Projected Barriers during Sound Barrier can be an option because they can still charge up your weapon to make it stronger, but the damage blocked won't mean much.
There isn't a whole lot Lucio can do with dealing with enemies stuck in a Graviton Surge besides spamming Sonic Projectiles at the clumped up enemies. However, Lucio can use a Sound Barrier to protect allies that are getting up close to the clumped up enemies. Allies such as a Roadhog using his ultimate Whole Hog, Genji using Dragonblade, Reaper using Deathblossom or Tracer using Pulse Bomb can all benefit from having Sound Barrier on to help them survive while using their ultimates against enemies stuck in a Graviton Surge.
5) Symmetra: Symmetra's Photon Shields offer slight value for Zarya. Zarya already has a 200 HP innate shield, with Symmetra's +25 Photon Shield, Zarya will have 225 total shield HP. The little extra shield can help Zarya survive a bit longer, allowing her to be slightly more aggressive in the front lines.
Symmetra is a backline support hero for the most part so she is less of a candidate for the Projected Barrier, however sometimes Symmetra will come face to face with enemies up close while she deals damage with her Projector Beam. In these instances, Symmetra can benefit a lot from the Projected Barriers. Symmetra is a slow moving support hero and she can be prone to getting flanked, so it's usually a good idea to keep an eye on her and give her a Projected Barrier when flankers are on her.
Symmetra's Sentry Turrets can be placed in rooms/hallways where health packs are placed, giving Zarya safe access to a health pack when she needs healing and if there are no healers nearby. This could also lure enemies into Symmetra's Turrets as well.
Zarya, being a slow moving tank with no mobility options, dramatically benefits from using Symmetra's ultimate Teleporter after dying.
The only thing Symmetra can do with a Graviton Surge is to fire a fully charged Photon Orb at the clumped up enemies. The orb will fly through and damage all enemies stuck in the surge. It's not overly powerful, but it can do some damage.
Zarya's top tank synergies:
1) D.va: After D.va boosts up towards an enemy, Zarya can give D.va a Projected Barrier to protect her while she is flanking an enemy. This serves to be very powerful for charging up Zarya's Particle Cannon while providing great protection for D.va. If D.va has a Projected Barrier on, she should refrain from using Defense Matrix while it's on to take full advantage of the barrier.
Zarya's personal Particle Barrier only lasts 2 seconds, which means out of all the tanks she is the most vulnerable (most of the time). D.va can help protect Zarya with Defense Matrix, but like I said before, D.va should refrain from using Defense Matrix if D.va or Zarya has a Particle/Projected Barrier on. D.va should also consider canceling Defense Matrix (by pressing the fire button) so that the barriers can absorb the damage to make Zarya's weapon stronger.
Zarya's Graviton Surge (clumps enemies up together) pairs well with D.va's ultimate Self-Destruct (to wipe them all out).
2) Winston: Since Winston tends to Leap into the front lines often to attack his enemies up close, he greatly benefits from Zarya's Projected Barriers, especially during the times when his Barrier Projector (shield globes) are on a cooldown.
Zarya also benefits a lot from Winston's shield globes for protection, especially when her personal Particle Barrier is on a cooldown. Shield globes can stop enemy fire from hitting Zarya, enabling her shields to regenerate to full HP.
When Zarya uses Graviton Surge, Winston's best synergy with it is to simply Leap up towards the clumped up enemies and throw down a Barrier so that the barrier blocks shots from enemies stuck in the surge while using his Tesla Cannon to dish out chain lighting damage to them. Winston shouldn't bother using his ultimate Primal Rage against enemies stuck in a Graviton Surge as it's not very effective for that.
Zarya can be weak against deadly close up enemies such as Mei, Reaper, Reinhardt and McCree. Winston's Primal Rage can be used to bat these enemies away from Zarya to ensure her survival against them.
3) Reinhardt: The ideal time for Reinhardt to receive Zarya's Projected Barriers is when he is charging towards a bunch of enemies or is up close attacking enemies with his Rocket Hammer. Reinhardt greatly benefits from Zarya's Projected Barriers during these times. Anytime Reinhardt is blocking attacks with his shield would be a waste of a Projected Barrier.
Reinhardt's shield allows Zarya to safely fire her Particle Cannon until her Personal Particle Barrier becomes available for use again.
Zarya's personal Particle Barrier can act as a shield for Reinhardt, allowing him to safely launch a Fire Strike if she is in front of him at the time (since Reinhardt has to lower his shield to launch a Fire Strike about every 6-8 seconds).
The best thing for Reinhardt to do when enemies are stuck in Zarya's Graviton Surge is for him to simply fire a Fire Strike at the clumped up enemies and to just shield their attacks so the rest of your allies can use their AOE attacks to take them out. Reinhardt can use an Earthshatter at the clumped up enemies to prevent them from countering it via means of shields, Ice Walls, healing and to prevent them from firing while stuck in the surge.
4) Roadhog: Zarya's Projected Barriers are useful with Roadhog because he tends to go in the front lines often to Chain Hook enemies and he doesn't have personal shields like other tanks do. Roadhog can also benefit from receiving a Projected Barrier right after he Chain Hooks an enemy into him, as any damage done back to Roadhog will just power up Zarya's weapon and protect Roadhog at the same time.
It's usually difficult for Roadhog to avoid enemy ultimates due to his poor mobility, but with Zarya's Projected Barrier he can get away from virtually every enemy ultimate in the game safely.
Roadhog can potentially save Zarya from deadly close up enemies such as Mei (and her freeze gun) or Reinhardt (and his Rocket Hammer) by Chain Hooking enemies away from her.
Roadhog's Whole Hog can be paired up with Zarya's Graviton Surge. Whole Hog can be effective against the clumped up enemies, but Roadhog would need to get somewhat close to the clumped up enemies to do enough damage which can be dangerous for Roadhog. Obtaining a Projected Barrier would dramatically help his situation during this time, or some other protection. The second best thing for Roadhog to do against enemies stuck in Graviton Surge is to just fire Scrap Gun shots at the clumped up enemies.
While anytime using Whole Hog, Roadhog is generally very vulnerable and he benefits from Zarya's Projected Barrier during this time.
5) Zarya: Double Zarya has seen some use in the competitive scene. Basically with two Zaryas, they can have Particle Barriers on each other for a large percentage of time. They each can use their personal Particle Barrier and then when that wears off they each give the other Zarya a Projected Barrier to keep the barriers going. When one Zarya is unable to have a barrier, the other Zarya with a barrier can get in front of the other Zarya to act as a shield for the other Zarya behind her. This makes it difficult for enemies to deal with, as they will have to constantly hold off on attacking quite frequently or they will just charge up both Zarya's weapons up.
When one Zarya uses Graviton Surge, two Zaryas firing explosive charged shots at the clumped up enemies tends to always get the job done to wipe them all out without the need from other allied ultimates or abilities to help kill the clumped up enemies.
Zarya also pairs well with:
1) Soldier 76: Zarya's Projected Barriers enables Soldier 76 to be more aggressive while in the front lines. Soldier 76 can also get around and behind the enemy with a combination of a Projected Barrier while sprinting to his destination. This can possibly give Soldier 76 flanking opportunities. Soldier 76's ultimate Tactical Visor can be protected with a Projected Barrier as well.
Soldier 76's Biotic Fields are very helpful for Zarya. She takes great advantage of the healing capabilities of Biotic Fields since she is slow moving and doesn't have any quick means to reach health packs.
When Zarya uses a Graviton Surge, it's usually best for Soldier 76 to not use Tactical Visor for it, since it does not do splash damage. Instead he should just shoot a Helix Rocket at the bunched up enemies followed by Pulse Rifle shots.
2) Hanzo: Zarya's Projected Particle Barriers can help Hanzo survive in harsh situations, especially when he is getting flanked. But since Hanzo is a defensive hero he is usually not a prime candidate for Projected Barriers, like offensive allied attackers usually are.
Hanzo's Sonic Arrow can allow Zarya to lob her explosive charge shots more effectively before enemies come around walls/corners, and it can allow her to make more informed decisions on where to lead her team to.
Zarya's ultimate Graviton Surge pairs well with Hanzo's Dragonstrike, as it will totally wipe out all the clumped up enemies in the surge.
3) Widowmaker: Zarya's Projected Barriers can help Widowmaker survive in harsh situations, especially when she is getting flanked. But since Widowmaker is a defensive hero she is usually not a prime candidate for Projected Barriers, like offensive allies usually are.
Widowmaker's ultimate Infra-Sight can allow Zarya to lob her explosive charge shots more effectively before enemies come around walls/corners, and it can allow her to make more informed decisions on where to lead her team to.
Zarya's Graviton Surge doesn't really have much synergistic value with Widowmaker. Widowmaker can lob a Venom Mine at the clumped up enemies as it will deal a damage over time effect to all enemies stuck in the surge. Otherwise, sniper shots is the only other solution for her.
4) Torbjorn: Zarya's Projected Barriers can be effective on Torbjorn, especially when he is trying to repair/upgrade his turret or run in the front lines to pick up Scrap. Other than that, Projected Barriers get less use from Torbjorn than other heroes would. Zarya's personal Particle Barrier can provide a shield for Torbjorn and his turret from taking extra damage.
Even though 50% of Zarya's health consists of regenerating shield, she can still benefit from having an Armor Pack on, but not nearly as much as other heroes would. This means, it's generally better for Torbjorn to give more "squishy" allies an Armor Pack before Zarya.
When Zarya uses Graviton Surge there really isn't anything special Torbjorn can do to kill all the clumped up enemies in the surge besides doing Rivet Gun shots and possibly using Molten Core so he can fire more rapidly at all the bunched up enemies.
5) Mei: Zarya's Projected Barrier can be useful on Mei when she is freezing targets up close with her freeze gun. This can keep Mei going strong without having to use Cryo-Freeze and can potentially keep Zarya's weapon charged up.
Zarya's slow mobility can make it hard for her to run from the enemy when overwhelmed. Mei can use Ice Walls to block them away from Zarya to allow her to recuperate faster.
Zarya's Graviton Surge doesn't really have any synergies with Mei. The best thing for Mei to do with enemies stuck in the surge is to shoot Icicles at the clumped up enemies. It's generally too risky for Mei to go up close with the attempt to freeze the clumped up enemies as they are still able to shoot and use their abilities. If the rest of your allies cannot provide enough fire power to kill the enemies stuck in the surge then Mei can use her ultimate Blizzard, as the enemies will be frozen by the time the Graviton Surge ends.
6) Pharah: Zarya's Projected Barrier is very useful on Pharah because it can help her survive while using her ultimate Barrage or other times such as after getting chain hooked in by a Roadhog. Zarya can also use her personal Particle Barrier and then get in front of Pharah while she uses Barrage to further protect her by blocking incoming shots.
Zarya's Graviton Surge pairs well with Pharah's Barrage. The clumped up enemies in the surge is a great target for Barrage. Pharah still needs to be careful as enemies can still fight back while stuck in the surge, so giving her a Projected Barrier or some other kind of protection during this time is ideal.
Zarya's neutral synergies:
1) Junkrat: Zarya's Projected Barrier can be used on Junkrat when he is either getting ambushed or when he decides to be more aggressive by mine jumping around his enemies, exposing himself more to enemy fire. A Projected Barrier can also be used when Junkrat stays still while using his ultimate Rip-Tire, potentially protecting him from ambushes while steering his tire around.
Junkrat's Rip-Tire pairs well with Zarya's Graviton Surge. The clumped up enemies from the Graviton Surge is a great target for a Rip-Tire since the blast radius will most likely kill anyone stuck in the surge. Zarya can also increase the chance of the tire exceeding by getting in front of it with her personal Particle Barrier to block shots from destroying the tire for a few seconds.
Another easy combo Junkrat can do with Zarya's Graviton Surge is to simply throw a Concussive Mine at the clumped up enemies to deal a lot of damage to them. Even Junkrat's Grenade launcher is a good way to deal damage to the surged up enemies as well.
2) Genji: Genji is usually in a great position to take advantage of Zarya's Projected Barrier, since he is usually in the front lines harassing and ambushing the enemy. A Projected Barrier also works great for protecting Genji when he is using his ultimate Dragonblade.
Genji should be careful when Zarya uses Graviton Surge, as getting up close to the clumped up enemies with Dragonblade is still a very risky endeavor for Genji since the enemies can still fight back while in the surge. Genji should only consider getting up close if he can get a Projected Barrier on him, or some kind of protection.
3) Bastion: Zarya's Projected Barrier can protect Bastion from getting flanked. Zarya can also time a Projected Barrier on a Bastion Sentry before he gets hit by Reinhardt's Fire Strike or Symmetra's Photon Orbs. Bastion can also perform his Self-Heal while being attacked under a Projected Barrier without having it get interrupted.
Zarya can also position herself in front of a Bastion Sentry while she uses a personal Particle Barrier to protect Bastion from getting shot instead.
Enemies stuck in Zarya's Graviton Surge happens to be a decent target for a Bastion Sentry's gatling gun to fire at. Bastion's ultimate Tank Form is also another method of killing enemies stuck in a Graviton Surge thanks to the massive splash damage done by Tank Form's cannons. A Projected Barrier can also be used on Bastion's Tank Form to provide extra protection to make it more successful.
4) Reaper: Reaper is a prime target for Zarya's Projected Barrier since he is generally in the front lines attacking close to the enemy and greatly benefits from the quick temporary shield the Projected Barrier gives, allowing Reaper to dish out easy shotgun damage while blocking shots and transferring it to Zarya's Particle Cannon to make it stronger. The Projected Barrier especially comes in handy when Reaper deals with deadly close up enemies such as Reinhardt, Mei, and McCree.
Zarya's Graviton Surge can be paired up with Reaper's ultimate Deathblossom, but it can still be risky for Reaper to use Deathblossom with the surged up enemies because they can still fight back while stuck in the surge. However giving Reaper a Projected Barrier (or receiving some other kind of protection) in this situation is ideal in order for Reaper to survive a Deathblossom against a Graviton Surge.
5) McCree: Zarya's Projected Barrier can help keep McCree alive, especially when he's dealing with long range attackers such as snipers. Up close and McCree can protect himself and Zarya with his Flashbangs.
McCree's Deadeye is not the greatest ultimate to pair with Zarya's Graviton Surge, but it can prevent the surged up enemies from running away while McCree lines up his shots. During this time, Zarya can help protect McCree while he is using Deadeye with a Projected Barrier. Zarya can also simply get in front of McCree to block shots from her own personal Particle Barrier.
6) Tracer: Tracer is usually in a great position to take advantage of Zarya's Projected Barrier, since she is usually in the front lines harassing and ambushing the enemy. A Projected Barrier also works great for protecting Tracer right before she throws out her ultimate Pulse Bomb, which can allow her to safely aim a good Pulse Bomb throw out.
Tracer's Pulse Bomb works great with enemies stuck in a Graviton Surge, but tracer still needs to be careful, as getting up close to the clumped up enemies is still a risky endeavor for Tracer since the enemies can still fight back while in the surge. Tracer can Blink and then Recall after throwing the Pulse Bomb, but she can still benefit from a Projected Barrier to ensure her survival while attempting this.
